Custom-Built 1972 Corvette Roadster

C3 Corvettes have a passport stamped in every corner of the car world, not just on the open boulevards of Southern California, but also the tighter streets of Istanbul where these cars pull eyes like a magnet wrapped in fiberglass. Ecvet Sayer, a business owner in Turkey, with a taste for bold statements and polished metal, wanted to build “the ultimate” custom 1972 Corvette, something that announces itself before it even turns a wheel.

To get there, he shipped his mostly stock Corvette to Tim Palazzolo at GAP Industries in Hockley, Texas. The GAP crew has built a reputation of turning already-desirable muscle cars into something special. Ecvet was familiar with GAP’s work, he also understood their position in the high-end muscle car world, as their fabrication skills and attention to detail are second-to none. He knew they’d be able to morph his garden-variety C3 Corvette into a one-off, high-end ride with a personality all its own.

“When the car arrived, it was in decent shape, so there wasn’t tons of repair work to be done,” Palazzolo says. “Ecvet and his two sons worked with Kris Horton of Cars by Kris to come up with a rendering depicting the Vette’s direction. We took that artwork and added our own spin. Turning something from paper into reality is never easy, but I think we got pretty damn close.”

“Pretty close” in this case feels like a humble understatement.

The rendering served as a compass, yet the build evolved throughout the four-year gestation. Ecvet had one non-negotiable preference: Chrome. Not a hint of it. Not an accent. He wanted shine with conviction. Palazzolo admits they leaned into it, maybe even past the edge, layering polished surfaces across the car like jewelry on a prizefighter. The trick, though, was balance. Too much flash and the car becomes a mirror. Too little and the vision falls flat.

That’s where the paint steps in and steadies the whole composition.

Finished in Randy Apple Red, the Corvette carries a color that doesn’t just sit on the body, it radiates. It’s deep, saturated, and loud in the right ways. Against that backdrop, the chrome delivers, giving the car unmistakable visual rhythm.

Underneath the skin, the car takes a hard left turn from nostalgia into modern performance.

The factory bones are gone, replaced by a Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis that brings the suspension into the modern world. Up front, billet control arms and C7-based spindles work with Penske remote reservoir shocks and Hyperco springs, while a splined sway bar keeps the car flat when the road twists. Out back, a fully independent setup mirrors the intent, trading leaf springs for precision.

Stopping power comes from massive 14.66-inch Brembo rotors, clamped by six-piston calipers at all four corners. A Wilwood triple master cylinder setup ties it all together, giving the car a smooth, confident, braking feel.

Detailed angle highlighting the polished billet valve cover engraved with 582 script beside custom hood louvers and tubular headers.

Built by Sonny’s Racing Engines, the 582ci big-block is the centerpiece in both attitude and output. With a 4.375-inch bore and 4.600-inch stroke, it’s a long-arm bruiser assembled with a Callies crank, Carillo rods, and Wiseco pistons. Compression sits at 10.5:1, a number that balances aggression with street manners. A custom-ground camshaft orchestrates the valvetrain, while Brodix aluminum heads move air with the kind of efficiency that makes big numbers feel almost casual.

A Holley Terminator manages injection duties, backed by MSD hardware and Holley coils. Air flows through a modified single-plane intake and spent gases exit through custom headers feeding a full 4-inch exhaust system, all crafted by GAP. The result is 1,015 hp and 787 lb-ft of torque. Numbers that demand respect.

A TREMEC T56 Magnum six-speed transmission keeps the driver engaged, offering both highway composure and aggressive acceleration when called upon. A Tilton clutch handles the handshake between engine and gearbox, while a Driveshaft Shop unit transfers power rearward. Out back, a Strange Engineering 9-inch with 3.70 gears and 35-spline axles ensure durability without sacrificing responsiveness.

The wheels and tires complete the stance. Custom-designed 18-inch pieces from Greening Auto Company stretch wide, 11 inches up front and 12 in the rear, wrapped in Toyo R888 rubber. With 315s leading and 325s following, the footprint is as serious as the engine above it.

Inside, rich Relicate leather in brilliant white covers the seats and panels, while custom work from Classic Car Studio shapes the door panels and console. Recaro seats provide support, and a custom double-hoop rollbar integrates into the structure without disrupting the visual flow. The dash keeps a factory-inspired look while armed with Dakota Digital instrumentation, delivering information in metric for its Turkish owner.

Touches like a custom wood steering wheel, billet pedals, and carefully integrated Alpine and Kicker audio system round out the interior.

The exterior modifications push the proportions into something more aggressive without losing the C3’s identity. The rear quarter-panels are widened by 4 inches per side, the fronts by 3, giving the car a planted, muscular posture. A Dynamic Corvette L88-style hood adds presence, while custom bumpers, grille work, and hand-built brass window trim refine the details. Even the smallest elements, from the fuel filler to the taillight surrounds, carry the imprint of deliberate craftsmanship.

Ecvet’s first look at the finished car came under the bright lights of the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. No quiet reveal, no gradual introduction. Just the full impact of a vision realized.

“I had not seen the car completed until then,” he says. I was amazed how great it came out. People really seemed to gravitate to it, which I understand because the car is beautiful.”

This Corvette respects its origins, then builds on them with modern engineering, bold styling, and willingness to push past safe decisions. It’s a car that reflects its owner’s taste and the builder’s capability in equal measures.

In the end, that’s what sets builds like this apart. They aren’t just assembled, they are authored. Every component, every finish choice, every line in the bodywork contributes to a larger narrative. One that starts in Istanbul, takes shape in Texas, and ends wherever the road opens up and the pedal goes down.
