About the Build:
My survivor 1969 Camaro Z/28 is equipped with both its original 4.88 rear axle, a ratio that was not available to the general public in the 1969 model year, and an M22 H.D. four-speed transmission. The car presents very well with its nearly flawless original Daytona Yellow exterior paint and its remarkable, unblemished original interior. The odometer shows 29,900 actual miles, as of this date.
During the 1967 and 1968 model years, buyers could order a performance-oriented Camaro with an axle ratio as high as 4.56 or even 4.88. That ended in 1969. The highest numerical ratio available as a regular production option was limited to 4.10 in 1969. Anyone wishing to have Chevrolet build their car with either the 4.56 or 4.88 ratio had to work with the dealer to route the order through Chevrolet’s Central Office Production Order (COPO) system, using COPO code 9511, to request either axle ratio. The first owner of my car somehow knew how to do that. I am the second owner, having bought the car in 1979. In addition, the first owner added the somewhat rare M22 H.D. four-speed transmission to his order.
Jerry MacNeish (of Camaro Hi-Performance LLC), nationally recognized 1st Gen Camaro Expert and certified IAAA Appraiser, certified and appraised my car on July 20, 2026. In his report, he said: “Mr. C. Brick is the documented second owner to this very special Z/28. I have been involved with these cars since they were new dating back over 58 years and counting. This is the one and only 1969 Z/28 I’ve inspected and certified with a factory-installed COPO 9511 4.88 ring-and-pinion.”
Just prior to the MacNeish appraisal, the car was judged by the Vintage Certification group at the 2026 Camaro Nationals Car Show in Morgantown, Pennsylvania, where it was awarded their “Legacy” level, meaning four of the six areas of operation, exterior, interior, underhood, underbody, and trunk were judged to be a minimum of 85 percent original.
