A lifelong hot rodder, Gerry Burger was afflicted with hot rod fever before he was old enough to drive. It was a local hot rodder, drag racer and speed shop owner Bob Zorn and his black channeled 32/3W that first piqued his interest in the early sixties. In 1963, armed with a valid drivers’ license, he began a string of homebuilt hot rods that continues to this day with his latest 1936 Ford Phaeton project. A chance encounter in 1972 with famed hot rodder Tom Medley started him on the path to becoming an automotive photojournalist. That first story, published in Rod & Custom in 1972, lead to eight years of freelance writing and photography for over thirty automotive titles. In 1981 he launched Rodder’s Digest Magazine. He owned and operated the magazine until it was sold in 1995 and remained the editor until 1998. From there he became Editor of Street Rod Builder and American Rodder along with the responsibility of being Editorial Director for Buckaroo Communications. In recent years he has returned to freelance writing producing technical stories, car features and event coverage for a multitude of automotive titles and authoring two books. His hobbies have always revolved around cars, sports car racing a Porsche 944, and of course building and driving hot rods. While traditional hot rods remain his first love, he has a deep appreciation for virtually anything with four wheels. He has two grown children, Ty Burger and Amy Yancey. Gerry currently resides in Saint Simons Island, Georgia with his wife Jill.
